Petrozavodsk-Kizhi Island-Valaam-Petrozavodsk

(the tour recommended as the extension to Moscow-St.Petersburg programs)

Day 1.

  • Departure from St.Petersburg to Petrozavodsk early morning, at about 06.00 A.M. (the train journey take about 5 hours). Arrival to Petrozavodsk, meeting with the guide.
  • Petrozavodsk City Tour by bus. A 2-hour bus tour around the city centre of Petrozavodsk will acquaint you with its more than 300 year history. You'll see the buildings of the central and the most vivid streets of the city - Lenina Avenue and the houses of the quiet city streets. Within the tour you will see the Governor's park, city embankment and much more...The excursion lasts for about 2-2,5 hours.
  • Departure to the Kizhi Island by hydrofoils (the trip takes 1 hour and 30 min.).
  • Walking tour in the Kizhi Museum with a local English-speaking guide. (4 hours on the island)
  • Lunch on the island.
  • The most remarkable monument of ancient wooden architecture is the Kizhi ensemble - a group of small islands in the skerries of the southern part of the Zaonezhye region, on one of which the pogost of Kizhi (i.e. the Kizhi enclosure) is located.
    The architectural ensemble of Kizhi has served as the foundation for an open-air museum well-known throughout the world. The most significant monuments of old wooden architecture have been moved to this place. Old buildings that were distorted by renovation were restored to their original appearance.

  • Departure to Petrozavodsk. Check in the hotel "Fregate".

Day 2.

  • Breakfast at hotel. Meeting with guide in the hotel lobby. Departure to the Kinerma village (110 km.)
  • Tour of the village with a visit to the chapel (XVIII century), a visit to the ethnocultural center, a tour of the exhibition "Life in Kinerma".
  • Lunch with national dishes from the Russian oven.
  • Departure to the husky dog kennel. Excursion.
  • Back to Petrozavodsk.

Day 3.

  • Breakfast at hotel. Early departure to the Sortavala city (247 km).
  • Arrival in Sortavala. Departure to the Valaam Island by hydrofoils (the trip takes 50 min.).
  • Visit the central Transfiguration Cathedral, the Church of the Resurrection, observe fairy-tale Gethsemane Skete, and enjoy the beautiful forests and lake landscapes of the Island. In between of the tours the Monastery choir performs a short but impressive concert of the church songs. Lunch is served at the refectory and includes typical monastery meals such as vegetarian soup and fish. (5 hours on the island)
  • Departure to Sortavala. Transfer to the Ruskeala (30 km.)
  • Excursion to the marble canyon. (1 h 30 min.)
  • The famous marble and lime plant is located there there. The marble has beeing extracted since XVIII century, it was used for a decoration Kazanskiy and Isakievskiy churches in St-Petersburg. On the way to Petrozavodsk, a stop at the Tohmajoki waterfall. The height of the waterfall is 8-9 meters. This is a very picturesque place.
    Running length: 12-13 hours

  • Back to Petrozavodsk.

Day 4.

  • Breakfast at hotel. Meeting with guide in the hotel lobby. Departure to Marcial Waters Resort (280 km).
  • Visiting the first Russian resort "Marcial Waters", founded by Peter I. Tasting healing water from glandular sources. Visit to the picturesque place - Sampo hill. Lunch.
  • Visit to the Kivach Nature Reserve.
  • Back to Petrozavodsk.

Day 5.

  • Early check out and transfer to the train station. 06.00 A.M. train to St.Petersburg.

Price per person.

The cost of the tour will be 877 Euro p.p. in a dbl for 2 pax, 698 Euro p.p. in a dbl for 4 pax participating, including the train tickets St.Petersburg-Petrozavodsk-St.Petersburg as per program.
